Ive known about mc:sm since it came out. since like around 2015 but ive never managed to play it because every youtuber seemed to hate it and think that its bad and who am i if not a mindless sheep going with the heard? hahaha. I’ve been an avid player of minecraft java edition since 2013, I’ve played it on and off since then - mostly multiplayer stuff before… 2018ish. So yeah I know some stuff about the game that mc:sm is based off of so I’d like to think that I have some credentials when talking about minecraft bullshit.
I haven’t really gotten to season 2 so yeah this is just my thoughts on season 1
Minecraft storymode is kinda old, the update that it’s based around was new around 2016. That being said M:SM was created before the nether update and seeing the old nether was really amusing! There’s something so bittersweet seeing that old nether in story mode. on one hand it’s very Very nostalgic, but on the other I realised that the old nether was kinda ass. Absolutely empty, bland as hell. Glad that mojang changed it but at the same time, it was nice seeing it again.
I made a big ass paragraph about all of the inconsistencies in mc:sm. About how the farlands couldn’t have been reached in a couple of days, how petra uses a gold sword, one of the worst materials in minecraft, so on and so forth but those complaints are kinda corny. who would genuinely give a shit about consistencies like that? They don’t really impact the story that they’re trying to convey. Anyways I digress
They also do a lot of creative liberties on other minecraft concepts aswell. Like with sorens mod farm. the design is clunky and it probably wouldn’t work in game because you would have to load in more chunks but it looks awesome And I guess that’s all that matters! There’s a lot of concepts like that in mc:sm.
I think the things that they did with the farlands was actually very fun. Like the farlands have always been an interesting concept to me. With the freaky generation and all. I think it would’ve been an interesting concept if Mojang actually made it a real biome that you can explore at the end of the world. the fact that it was patched out always kinda bummed me out. I think mc:sm made what I wanted the farlands to actually be in minecraft: Java edition and made it and I have to give them props for that.
I’m not gonna lie the first arc was pretty… underwhelming? I think one of the things that I didn’t really like in this game was the characters. I didn’t really care about most of them. I think petra and Lucas (Lucas is on thin ice honestly) are the only ones that get any screen time and I think they’re the potential romance options so of course theyre the only ones that are more focused on. the bomb guy and the red stone lady were kinda undercooked. Like you recruit one of them it’s revealed that they have beef with one another, that never gets explored and then one of them dies. Magnus died in my game but honestly i didn’t give a fuuuuuck because what was there to miss? there was 4 interactions with him until he kicked the bucket. just wished that there was more time to flesh out their dynamics or hwatever maybe I just selected the paths that made screen time with them as little as possible.
So my impression of minecraft story mode at the very beginning is that the witherstorm was this huge arc that spanned over the whole 2 seasons. So I was kinda surprised that the witherstorm was defeated in like the first 4-5 episodes. My first thought was “I wasn’t even halfway through the first season? What is there more to say?”
I was cautious with the second arc because the first one was kinda middling but also kinda curious because I was going in completely blind at that point. I was really surprised at how fun it was! Like yeah sure the characters are mid again but The second arc had a lot of nods to popular multiplayer games like skyblock, spleef, and the wall! Not only that but they kinda made it so their integration makes sense. I thought that was cool
Also fucking og minecraft YouTubers??? Dantdm?? They also changed his hair color every scene because dantdm used to dye his hair a lot back in the day. those kinda details are nice. But fucking uhhhhh I think the murderer was a little too obvious. Like she was the only person in that house that wasn’t a popular YouTuber in the group so it was kinda obvious. Like it would’ve been really interesting if they made one of the YouTubers the murderer. Like make them pick out straws or someshit.
All in all I think it’s kinda a mixed bag. looking back on it now, I think the hate for it was a lil bit overblown but understandable. A lot of the characters are generic and kinda corny, they’re easy to make fun of. Like it’s very mid and I think to some people that’s worse than being outright dogshit. But on the other hand It’s obvious that there was a lot of thought put into this game and they at least did some research and with most of the things that they did diverge from (setting wise) either made it better thematically or the inconsistency with the base game didnt really matter.
All in all my thoughts on minecraft story mode is that it’s alright? It’s maybe on the low end of mid if you really care about character writing and you probably won’t get anything out of it if you didn’t play minecraft in the 2010s. Its slop but its slop that I enjoyed mostly
Oh fuck I forgot about gameplay. Uhhhhhh it’s extreme ass. It’s a telltale game what do you expect?
Slay The Princess
So I've played slay the princess not so recently like a couple months
ago but i have some thoughts about it. So slay the princess is a
visual novel about slaying a princess. it really sticks
the landing on like what its like playing a graphic novel. like with
most visual novels its kinda like unraveling puzzle where with every
restart and different character you choose to spend time with you find
out different perspectives. Slay the princess is kinda like that but
its like... the whole game and you arent the only one who gains new
knowledge from it. i thought that was a pretty nifty premise.
So like I've implied the game repeats. ALOT like with one whole play
through you're gonna be hearing Jonathan sims saying "you're on a path
in the woods" like a dozen times. It gets very repetitive very quickly
so if you're not into that then uh skip this game i guess? Oh yeah
Jonathan sims voices most of the characters in this game. He does a
pretty good job with making different voices or cadences for each
personality. my personal favorite was The voice of the smitten. only
because he sounded like Matt Berry. hehehe. another thing, unlike most
graphic novels you cant really go back and find out another path in
the middle of the game. i mean you can bit its kinda fruitless so
don't try and do that.
So i think you (the raven) Represent the embodiment of nothing and
the princess embodies everything - like i think thats what they were
going for. If you killer her in one of your playthoughs then
everything disappears, everything except the cabin. also the narrator
described her in the final act as "bringing death" or something to
that measure. which would be true but she also brings life in this
world and literally everything else. she starts to warp reality in the
3rd repeat. but shes also... hollow? like she changes depending on
what choices you make, like for example if you pick up the knife the
princess is much more cold or hostile to you while if you leave the
knife shes more docile and friendly. I think this is because of the
implication that comes from picking up the knife. If you pick up the
knife then you influence the raven. he now sees the princess as a
threat therefore they need the knife and so the princess embodys that
as a result and vice versa i guess.
anyways im pretty sure that this game just depicts a simulation or
someshit like that look im thinking too much about this and my thoughs
just become incoherent when i type them down anyways slay the princess
good game. go play it
Baldurs gate 3
Okay so baldurs gate 3 is a pretty good game but everybody has sung
its praises so I'm just gonna put down some critique fora change. I
can’t really get behind how marvel esque the character designs are
(well most of them) like gale’s been a hermit for a year but he looks
like a rockstar with a perfect chad like jawline... ok being a hermit
dosent do shit to your jawline but you get my point! I’m just saying
he should look more greasy more disheveled. Like this is a problem
with almost all of the companions. like they're airbrushed
supermodels, the only person that it would make sense for is astarion
and it sucks because the lil glimpses of imperfection that we actually
see in there characters I absolutely adore. Like karlachs burnscars
and how the infernal engine is pulsing inside her is just soo so
amazing, the scars on Wylls face? His devil form? Beautiful amazing, I
absolutely love it, Wylls one of the best characters design wise and
you cannot tell me otherwise because i am objectively correct about
everything and anything trust me.
There seems to be a lot of fun concepts in this game that are just
implemented very very lightly that just make me sad. Like the
netherese orb in gales chest that links to his eye? I didnt even
recognize that shit on my first play through, what if it was more
prominent? what if in the start of the game he's using magic to cover
up how badly it looked and in the big "hey I've got a bomb in my
chest" reveal he feels comfy enough to stop covering up how bad it is.
i just want gale to have a big fucked up scar of his face man. also if
you say this deters you from romancing him then have you considered
that you have a peanut brain?
the only good GOOD character designs i can see in this game is from
evil characters... Like the thorm silblings? Balthazar? auntie ethel?
They’re such a breath of fresh air compared to everybody else!!
Agh but i understand why everybodys smoothed out, the games industry is in shambles and having a game this big be released is a a monumentous amount of work in of itself
hwatever BG3 is a good game go play it if you can
edit: I'm just gonna ramble about some things about the game that nobody but me cares about. So raphael the demon. mephistopheles child. everybody in the community or atleast the parts that im exposed to thinks that raphael is a bottom which is a fine headcannon im not gonna argue with headcannons but i think this line of thinking came from misconstruing a line in the game. so if you kill harleep in the house of hope you can speak to his dead body and you can ask whether raphael liked to be ontop or below harleep and he says something like "below never ontop" which i think people thought it ment raphael likes bottoming becasue being below somebody is mostly assosiated with reciving more than giving. but i think what harleep ment is that he rides raphael, and raphael dosent do shit but just lays there while looking at himself. like i think this interpretation makes more sense becasue it fits more with who raphael is i think. making you do all the work while he just lays there n shit like that. hwhatever man idc
Note: The entries below are considerably older, like they come from
when this page was a game review thing and not like a personal opinions
on games thing so keep that in mind
PSYCHONAUTS
I think initially the only reason that I played this game is that
humble bundle had a sale where you got games free, and this was one of
them. Which is great! because this game is cool. I like all the minds
that you go into are unique and express the person’s thoughts n shit.
I think the best one IMO is Edgars one with the bull that is annoying
as hell, I just liked the whole vibe of that area, the whole cityscape
gives me serotonin, and the endgame would be pretty good if I could
fucking finish it, the spiral thing with the water is just impossible
to complete... or maybe I’m just bad at games... either one
Celeste
I think I bought this game because it was one of those “get killed
every 2 seconds” kinda game because I was into that at that time and I
gotta say, this game blew my expectation away. The theme of anxiety
and shit is just *chefs kiss* EXCELLENT, like as somebody who has jack
shit social skills because my unbearable anxiety, this really hits
home. The constant self-doubt, the intrusive thoughts I just love how
badiline is portrayed. Also, the gameplay, music just everything is
excellent, I think this game was the first game that taught me to not
rage at these sorts of games or give up. s’pretty good, didn’t get all
of the hearts though because I’m a pleb U_U
Hotline Miami
It is a pretty good game. The player sprites are uncanny but it
doesn’t really take away from the value of the game. This was one of
the games that (thankfully) I wasn’t spoiled on. I had a good time
just playing it and letting the story unravel before me. the gameplay
and the music is extremely good, the electronic music and the kickass,
smooth gameplay go hand-in hand
Echo VN
playing Echo was an absolutely decimating experience I am thoroughly
astonished at how good the storytelling in this game is. the game
graphics are kind of inconsistent but honestly, I don’t care. this
game left a big hole in my heart, shit has fucked me up. At the point
of writing this I’ve played all the routes except for Leos (honestly,
he’s one of my least favourite characters in the group he’s not bad
he’s just... meh) and all of them punched me in the gut in some way.
In my first playthrough I played TJ's route and holy shit bro I don’t
think I should’ve played that route first that was the heaviest out of
the bunch and I felt like punching chase by the end of it HRRRGHHHH
ITS SUCH A GOOD VISUAL NOVEL
Inscryption
My first thought when seeing this game was "oooh the guy that made
pony island made this? i gotta play this man there’s probably some 3rd
wall breaking shit in here" and yeah I was pretty much correct on that
case .The first part of the game was pretty good, the game felt
balanced and I really wanted to know what/who the stoat, stinkbug and
the stunted wolf were (honestly at the beginning i thought they were
the gamedevs that got sucked into the game somehow but I’m kinda glad
i was wrong because that theory really sucked). The second part of the
game really made me appreciate how balanced the first act was because
HOLY SHIT I nearly rage quit at some of the bosses because holy fuck.
If you don’t have good RNG for your deck you’re fucked and have to
concede, in act 1 it was balanced because you always had the option of
getting a squirrel from the squirrel pile, act 2 doesn’t have that
shit and its soo so infuriating when you get cards that cost
bones/sacrifices that you don’t have because it’s your first play and
you have to ring the bell and get hit. Act 3 was... kind boring except
for the boss fights which had awesome mechanics like magnificus's boss
was so good I picked some rules that made it so that when a card got
killed another card would appear on the board and it would endlessly
loop for a very long time, shit was chaotic.. but also, kind of
annoying. I was kind of disappointed that the other scribes weren’t
cards in the game buut eh that’s kind of nitpicky.
The Hex
I initially played this game because I’ve heard that it had
connections to inscription (something about gamefuna?). By the looks
of the trailer, I didn’t really have huge expectations of this game it
sounded like a murder mystery kind of thing which sounded kind of
tedious and stressful. I’m glad that it was a totally different game
that I was expecting, the characters were cool and really thought out,
I especially liked Bryce and Lazarus I have no idea why I just like
the vibes. I can’t blame em for (presumably) killing Lionel, he was an
extreme cunt although in his defence did lionel know that his
creations were sentient? if he knew would he have treated them better?
I don’t get paid enough to think about games this hard.
Splatoon 3
Splatoon is a series that ive always wanted to play but ive never
gotten the consoles for it, my family wasnt really into nintendo
stuff. I used to be obsessed with the first one and honesty I'm still
kinda bitter that i never got to play it. I cant really say anything
on splatoon 3 except for the story mode since its the only segment of
the game that you can play offline so this is just a reveiw for the
storymode and nothing else. The storymode is pretty good! There was
alot of levels that were challenging and cool. The target levels were
sooo hard especially the rail ones. Still havent completed the one
with the tri stringer. I loved big mans level, the concept is really
interesting although if you have a certian upgrade the boss is the
easiest in the game since it just tells you which big man is the real
one - but despite that i think its the most stressful out of the 3
because if you dont do shit quickly then the big men just get too much
and splat you pretty easily since they're pretty good at inking the
ground. one thing that i particuallary liked is the changes in the
anatomy of the inklings and the octolings, they look more... well
rounded? less uncanny, less bobbleheaded. The new hairstyles for the
octolings are godlike and im super glad that clothes and hairstyles
arent gender-locked anymore. from what ive played its super good, wish
i could participate in big run but eh. it is what it is.
